Bali Dreams
“I don’t paint dreams or nightmares, I paint my own reality” - Frida Kahlo
The surreal beauty of Bali was my reality sometime back and as the words echoed in my thoughts, ‘Bali Dreams’ came to life. The tapestry of colors reflected in the skies, seas and land was imbibed in the bold blue, vibrant pink and dynamic red backgrounds. The intricate pen and ink details took me in a state of trance symbolising the meditative vibes of this land while the rustic charcoal kept its earthen feel alive. Henceforth the colors and mediums were carefully chosen to depict the dimensional and dreamlike beauty of Bali.
The detailing of certain elements in each of these artworks was critical to depicting the underlying emotion like the monkeys represented the pure happiness and playfulness of a sibling bond, while the birds reflected the fleeting moments in a women’s life immersed in her day to day tasks. The contrast between the gigantic buddha and the little girl depicted how small we humans are in comparison to the creations.
Bali, was where dreams can take a flight and painting ‘Bali Dreams’ was the point wherein my dreams had become my reality and the reality, my dreams.
Open Windows enlightens simple life around us which can be interesting as well as inspiring based on perspective. Just a passing smile, a little moment in time, a surprised look or simply a friendly wave is a slice of life which can make a difference. Layering with knives in this particular series added interesting textures and a fresh feel to my work.
Dimensions of the human mind are complex and so is our life today. This series of work portrays the complexities of modern life where each one of us is multitasking not only physically but also at a subconscious level. We live multiple moments trying to balance all of them like a juggler. It is this tussle between the conscious and subconscious that adds layers of interest to my work. Paintings generally capture a moment however, my work captures multifarious moments in a surreal way.
